When can I have music in my civil wedding ceremony?
Civil wedding ceremonies generally divide into four sections, and you can can include music at any point in a civil ceremony.
- before the ceremony: when you guest assemble
- the entrance of the bride
- the ceremony and signing of the register
- the exit
Before the marriage ceremony, you might like to play gentle background music as your guests assemble. We generally don't advise to have live singing at this stage, as most guests want to talk and greet each other rather than listen to us singing!
When you are ready for you grand entrance, you need a slight pause, so your guests know something is about to happen. Then, we can sing you in with a song to cover your walk to the front of your wedding ceremony venue. Remember, in a hotel room or registry office, this might not actually be a very long walk, so something short is better!
During your wedding ceremony, you might like a song to allow you and your future spouse time to catch your breath before the vows. Most couples and guests certainly enjoy music during the signing of the register, and this is a perfect point for us to sing a solo or duet or two, as everyone will want to take photos too!
Finally, it's time to exit as man and wife for the first time, and we can sing you out of the ceremony space in style!
Can I have both recorded music and live singing?
Of course, it's your wedding after all! You might like to walk in or exit to a favourite song, or just a piece of gentle music, it's up to you. All we suggest is that your choice for the entry music is matched to our singing in style - walking in to a heavy metal track and then us singing "Over the Rainbow" might sound a little odd, for example!
Do I need an organist or piano player?
At non-religious and civil wedding ceremonies, we sing with specially recorded accompaniments played through our own discreet PA system, so no organist or pianist is required.
Can you sing anything?
Much as we'd like to say 'yes', we are classically trained singers and much as we'd like their income, we'll never be a Beyoncé or Snoop Doggy Dog! Generally, we say that if you like a classic song and don't mind who is singing it, then ask us if we can sing it. If you like a song sung by a particular artist, play a CD instead.
How long should my chosen songs be?
Wedding ceremonies in a registry office are allotted a certain time, and you'll need to allow some of that time for guests to enter and sit down, and for you and your guests to exit at the end. So, your chosen songs, music, readings, vows, etc, need to fit into the time left. For example, even if your ceremony time slot is 45 mins, your registrar will probably advise your ceremony lasts no longer than 30 minutes in total.
For wedding ceremonies at venues such as hotels, castles, etc, you probably will have more time. However, the duration of the ceremony does depend on the availability of your registrar at your venue, and they usually allow between 30 and 45 minutes for a civil wedding ceremony at a registered venue.
